With aviation sector flourishing globally, the demand for more top line aircrafts is increasing with each passing day. And with more aircrafts on board, the need arises for its regular maintenance and service. This is where the role of an aircraft maintenance engineer is important as he looks after the maintenance and services of the aircrafts used for commercial operations. AMEs (aircraft maintenance engineers) work under the direct supervision and control of aeronautical engineers for the maintenance work carried out for the aircrafts engine, frame, electrical systems and other auxiliary fittings.

Job Profile of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers

The AMEs could work on one type of aircraft or on several varied types of aircrafts. The AMEs are frequently trained to focus in electrical systems or work as air conditioning experts or even as pneumatic testers, etc.

They are the ones responsible for executing routine maintenance after the required number of flying hours have been accomplished

Many think aircraft maintenance engineering to be a degree or a diploma course, but in reality, its only a training programme. Once a student finishes the training, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issues a license. Maintenance and service of the aircraft in order to ensure safety are part of the lessons taught during the training sessions. Several DGCA approved institutes offer a 3 year aircraft maintenance engineering licence training course that are also part of aviation courses in India. Students having passed the plus two examinations with 50% marks in aggregate in chemistry, physics and mathematics or a 3 year diploma course in any engineering branch can take admission to AME training courses. No gender differences in such and both boys and girls can take admission.

First year of the training provides the students some basic information about the rules and regulations of the aircraft. The second year offers the students some general engineering as well as maintenance. The third year study focuses on particular areas such as heavy and light aircraft, jet engines or helicopters and piston engines. Besides the courses, the trainees need to undergo some structural aircraft kind of courses in avionics and mechanical stream. The trainees will then get a basic aircraft maintenance training certificate upon successfully completing the training programme. The students qualifying will be given a licence.

The students successfully finishing the training and those getting DGCAs license can get jobs in good aircraft maintenance firms and airports with an attractive package. The demand for AMEs is slated to grow over the years as more airlines would start functioning in the aviation sector thus demanding more AMEs.
